Poetry, Robert Louis Stevenson (Primary & Extended Day)
For more than 150 years, the poetry of Robert Louis Stevenson has delighted children and enchanted those of us who remain young at heart. His words capture timeless themes of childhood; his simple, musical rhyme makes reading joyful and fun.
After enjoying a light snack together, Mrs. Rogers will read a poem with all the drama, enthusiasm and joy she continues to discover in Stevenson's work. The children will then complete a craft or art project related to the poem. Click here to read more.
Classical Literature, The American Short Story (Elementary)
Although brief in form, the short story is a powerful literary genre; the message is potent, the story is irresistible, and the language is exquisite. It is quite often how we fall in love with classical literature. Do you recall The Falling of the House of Usher, Rip Van Winkle or A Christmas Memory? These have been the beginnings of many a bookworm.
Work will include the reading of the story, the information about the author and the historical and cultural background, the discussion about the significance of the subject matter, and the appreciation of the language followed by a small writing assignment and fun projects.
